Rankings measure academic prestige. International students also need to evaluate: (1) International student support services — dedicated advisors, orientation programmes, English language support, and visa compliance assistance. (2) Integration and social life — active international student societies, buddy programmes pairing new arrivals with current students. (3) Safety and discrimination — some campuses have better records than others on international student safety and inclusion. (4) Part-time work availability — proximity to student-friendly employers (campus jobs, hospitality, retail). (5) Accommodation guarantees — first-year accommodation guarantees for international students vary by university.

Data sources: The International Student Barometer (ISB) surveys 150,000+ international students annually. QILT (Australia) has an international student-specific survey. NSS (UK) includes international student responses. Individual university international student offices publish arrival and support guides. These sources, combined with direct outreach to current international students (LinkedIn, university subreddits), provide a more complete picture than rankings alone.
